Impact investing is an investment approach that combines financial goals with the intent to generate positive social and environmental impact, in an intentional and measurable manner. It consists of investing in companies or instruments that address societal challenges, while ensuring an economic return.

We were one of the first to apply impact finance in mission investments.  

Impact investing is a flexible approach, which can be implemented through various financial instruments (equity, debt, hybrids, real assets) and can be assessed both at a micro- and macro-economic level. 
We were one of the first foundations in Italy to promote mission investments, initially offering subsidised loans in their areas of intervention, subsequently supporting the creation of increasingly advanced financial instruments.

Mission-related investments

Mission-related investments are made not only to obtain an economic return proportionate to the risk but also to generate positive “externalities”, in line with the Foundation’s institutional purposes. To qualify as “mission-related”, an investment must be subject to a specific investigation.

Investments in the Cariplo World: Social Housing Fund

The initiative that, to date, has most heavily marked the commitment of the Fondazione Cariplo in this field began in 2004, with the Social Housing Foundation, to respond to the growing housing crisis and encourage the creation of resilient and supportive communities. SHF’s commitment led to the creation of the first Italian fund dedicated to social housing, the Fondo Abitare Sociale 1, which served as the basis for the subsequent development of the Integrated System of Social Housing Funds (SIF), which carries out social housing projects throughout Italy. The SIF, with a total size of approximately €3 billion, invested in by the CDP Group, banks, insurance companies, social security institutions, banking foundations and other investors interested in the development prospects of the region, is currently one of the largest impact investment programmes underway worldwide.
