Over the next decade many families may decide to bequeath their assets to charities. This is what has been found out by a research study conducted by Fondazione Cariplo and set out in the second Osservatorio’s Handbook.
The research study was carried out by the Foundation’s grantmaking assessment staff that estimated the total amount of assets that could be bequeathed to charities in the 2004-2020 period. The study was undertaken in relation to the 15 Community Foundations engaged in philanthropic activities and related fundraising at the local level within Fondazione Cariplo’s constituency (Lombardy and the provinces of Novara and Verbania).
As the research study was based on information gathered from Bank of Italy and ISTAT (National Institute of Statistics) databases, this allowed to calculate nationwide estimates too. Based on the value of assets owned by about 340 thousand families, it was estimated that in the 2004-2020 period in Italy up to €105 billion could be bequeathed to charities.
