{"id":12725,"date":"2025-12-15T15:46:43","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T14:46:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fondazionecariplo.it\/?post_type=progetto&#038;p=12725"},"modified":"2026-04-23T10:03:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T08:03:42","slug":"neglected-tropical-diseases","status":"publish","type":"progetto","link":"https:\/\/www.fondazionecariplo.it\/en\/progetto\/neglected-tropical-diseases\/","title":{"rendered":"Neglected Tropical Diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Neglected Tropical Diseases<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>An alliance between five European foundations \u2013 Fondazione Cariplo,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gulbenkian.pt\/\">Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Calouste Gulbenkian<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fondation-merieux.org\/\">Fondation M\u00e9rieux<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nuffieldfoundation.org\/\">Nuffield Foundation<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.volkswagen-stiftung.de\/\">Volkswagen Stiftung<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 to&nbsp;<strong>support research by African scholars <\/strong>against&nbsp;<strong>Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)<\/strong>, a group of illnesses that continue to be overlooked both scientifically and therapeutically but are extremely aggressive, with <strong>one-sixth of the world&#8217;s population<\/strong> suffering from them. NTDs affect poor populations \u2013 100% of countries classified as \u2018low-income\u2019 are affected by at least five NTDs simultaneously \u2013 in&nbsp;<strong>areas with a tropical climate<\/strong>. Of all the areas, <strong>sub-Saharan Africa<\/strong> is especially affected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Foundations have budgeted&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac3 million (\u20ac850,000 from Fondazione Cariplo)<\/strong>,&nbsp;to be allocated via a <strong>call for proposals<\/strong> to junior and senior African researchers (all with PhDs) required to take part \u2013 during their studies \u2013 in a&nbsp;<strong>mentorship<\/strong>&nbsp;with a European research institute. This serves as a means to&nbsp;<strong>invest in African human capital<\/strong>&nbsp;and at the same time to create a network of trans-national&nbsp;<strong>collaborations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The high-profile scientific initiative awards its research grants via a&nbsp;peer review&nbsp;process that meets the most rigorous standards and concludes with a final selection meeting. The winning research projects apply a&nbsp;<strong>cross-sectoral methodological approach<\/strong>&nbsp;and explore certain scientific topics in depth by correlating them with specific local requirements.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the programme,&nbsp;<strong>three editions<\/strong>&nbsp;of \u201cThe African Fellowship Programme on Neglected Communicable Tropical Diseases and Related Public Health Research\u201d call for proposals have been implemented. The first edition, in 2008, led to support for 14 research projects (with a financial commitment of \u20ac1.2 million). The second edition began in March 2009 and ended in February 2010 with the awarding of another nine research grants (totalling about \u20ac1 million). The&nbsp;<strong>third<\/strong>, completed in February 2012, awarded&nbsp;<strong>a further 10 research grants<\/strong>, for a total commitment of over <strong>\u20ac800,000<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project represents a great opportunity to&nbsp;<strong>develop \u2018African\u2019 capacity to conduct research and lay the foundations for the defeat of NTDs<\/strong>, diseases neglected not due to their rarity but because, despite their enormous spread, are \u2018forgotten\u2019. As evidence, bear in mind that under 1% of the 1393 active ingredients registered between 1975 and 2000 are associated with the treatment of an NTD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, unlike other infectious diseases, NTDs have not aroused the interest of policymakers, with recent exceptions.
