{"id":12433,"date":"2025-12-15T16:27:35","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T15:27:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fondazionecariplo.it\/?post_type=progetto&#038;p=12433"},"modified":"2026-04-28T14:09:02","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T12:09:02","slug":"cariplocrew","status":"publish","type":"progetto","link":"https:\/\/www.fondazionecariplo.it\/en\/progetto\/cariplocrew\/","title":{"rendered":"CariploCREW"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>cariploCREW<\/strong>, Co-design for REhabilitation and Well-being, is a Fondazione Cariplo action aimed at research into and implementation of&nbsp;<strong>innovative technological solutions&nbsp;<\/strong>for the habilitation, rehabilitation and well-being of people with temporary, permanent or age-related&nbsp;<strong>vulnerabilities or disabilities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>cariploCREW takes as its starting point the&nbsp;<strong>paradigm of Responsible Research and Innovation \u2013 RRI<\/strong>, with the aim of developing research and innovation in an inclusive way, oriented towards responding to the needs of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2015 to date, cariploCREW&#8217;s activities have developed through<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the cariploCREW project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the cariploCREW call for proposals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>cariploCREW project&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;purpose of the <strong>cariploCREW Project<\/strong>&nbsp;is to improve the quality of life of people living with vulnerabilities, through&nbsp;<strong>research, development and dissemination of technologies<\/strong>&nbsp;that can support people, their family members and caregivers in all areas of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve this goal, a decision was made to adopt a\u00a0<strong>global, integrated and multidisciplinary approach<\/strong>, based on the comparison between technical, scientific and medical knowledge, and know-how relating to other dimensions of personal life, such as the social, psychological and interpersonal spheres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technologies must\u00a0<strong>reach the market<\/strong>, be\u00a0<strong>accessible<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>respond to the concrete needs\u00a0<\/strong>of people with vulnerabilities: to achieve this, a decision was made to trial the methodology of <strong>co-planning<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>co-design<\/strong>\u00a0throughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">cariploCREW project methodology\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<strong>Control Room<\/strong> was set up to implement the project, formed by Fondazione Cariplo and Triw\u00f9, the company responsible for facilitating the working groups and the project internal and external communications. Fondazione Cariplo has set up an <strong>Advisory Board<\/strong>, consisting of Luca Leone (Universit\u00e0 Cattolica del Sacro Cuore), Matilde Leonardi (\u201cCarlo Besta\u201d Neurological Institute Research Hospital Foundation) and Franco Molteni (Valduce &#8220;Villa Beretta&#8221; Hospital), to validate the method adopted and the monitoring of the design phases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The activity addressed&nbsp;<strong>five different thematic areas<\/strong>, considered \u201cpromising\u201d with respect to the project hypotheses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>paediatric neuromotor disabilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>motor practice and disabilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>school inclusion and autism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>living environments for a new independence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>living environments to maintain independence as we age.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each individual thematic area gave rise to a&nbsp;<strong>workshop<\/strong>, attended&nbsp;by <strong>stakeholders from<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>companies and start-ups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>education and training, formal and informal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>civil society and the third sector<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>research and clinical<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>policymakers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshops trialled the&nbsp;<strong>co-design method<\/strong>: all interest groups were involved in a process to identify a solution to meet end users\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stages of cariploCREW project\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Still underway, the project has been structured into several stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>Phase 0 (June 2014 \u2013 March 2015)<\/strong>, the Control Room decided on the areas for action and subsequently identified and involved the stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>Phase 1 (March \u2013 December 2015)<\/strong>, five thematic workshops were developed. The outcome of the workshop activities is eight concepts, set out through the same number of project plans aimed at the development of the prototype, funded by Fondazione Cariplo. Participants contributed to the workshops free of charge, giving Fondazione Cariplo ownership of the intellectual property of the concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phase 2 in 2016<\/strong> was managed by Fondazione Filarete and was aimed at building business plans, to facilitate the transition from concept to prototype and product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Upon completion, the eight concepts were presented to an evaluation committee, six of which were selected for the prototyping phase.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Phase 3, still underway<\/strong>, focuses on the creation of&nbsp;<strong>six prototypes<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CAMBIO<\/strong>, a low-cost wheelchair usable in outdoor activities and amateur sport thanks to its variable set-up and traction change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AQTIVO<\/strong>, an item to improve buoyancy and safe swimming for people with disabilities. Designed to help everyone regain the pleasure of independence in the water, it also facilitates rehabilitation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MOSAIC<\/strong>, a multimedia kit to assist the transition into primary school, the first major milestone in socialisation, for children on the autistic spectrum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PLAYABLE<\/strong>, a game for children with neuromotor disabilities that encourages the enhancement of skills and abilities through play and fun with friends and family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>BABY CREW<\/strong>, a modular and functional seat, to promote proper posture for children with neuromotor disabilities. Thanks to its modularity and careful design, the seat supports the child in their growth and enables them to participate in family life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>industrialisation<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>marketing<\/strong>&nbsp;phases of the product\/service will be preceded by the formalisation of an agreement between Fondazione Cariplo, the participants in the previous phases and the companies involved, aimed at preserving the innovative, participatory and ethical features of the cariploCREW project. The first agreement signed \u2013 in February 2021 \u2013 was with the MOSAIC working group, following the closure of the trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">cariploCREW project, initial evaluations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2014 to date, the approach of Responsible Research &amp; Innovation has been&nbsp;<strong>adopted in many calls for funding<\/strong>, from public and private bodies, which address the world of research and business. The&nbsp;<strong>engagement<\/strong>&nbsp;of users and citizens is now almost necessary in the countless situations in which choices and changes must be made or decisions have to be taken that will have a social impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CREW\u2019s journey has been complex due to the&nbsp;<strong>difficulty of \u201cbringing together\u201d \u201cstrong\u201d entities<\/strong>&nbsp;(universities, CNR, the Foundation itself)<strong>&nbsp;and \u201cweak\u201d ones<\/strong> (associations, citizens, freelancers), with different missions, interests and corporate or legal structures, in the contractual stages of financing, intellectual property and the reinvestment of profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>stakeholders<\/strong>, many of whom have followed up on the project since phase 1,&nbsp;<strong>positively evaluated their participation in the project<\/strong>, the sharing of experiences and knowledge, and the composition of the working groups, appreciating the experimental and \u201cpioneering\u201d character of the CREW project. These elements emerged during a final evaluation session focusing on the participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Participants in cariploCREW project<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-heading\">cariploCREW call for proposals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the experience of the CREW project, in&nbsp;<strong>2019<\/strong>&nbsp;Fondazione Cariplo launched the&nbsp;<strong>cariploCREW call for proposals<\/strong>, with Filarete Servizi and the support of the UniMi Foundation, in partnership with the Municipality of Milan, the University of Milan, the Giannino Bassetti Foundation, Assolombarda, the Lombard Life Sciences Cluster, Cariplo Factory, Italia Startup, the Vodafone Foundation, Polifactory, Nesta Italia, The Hub, Humans to Humans, Joint Innovation Hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>call<\/strong>&nbsp;supported&nbsp;<strong>entrepreneurial initiatives and projects<\/strong>&nbsp;aimed at developing innovative products and services that could be brought to market at sustainable costs and based on technologies with TRL \u2013 technology readiness level \u2013 equal to or greater than 3 (Proof-of-Concept or demonstration of feasibility).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prize is an&nbsp;<strong>acceleration course<\/strong>&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<strong>networking day<\/strong>&nbsp;for the first 15 selected projects,&nbsp;<strong>cash prizes<\/strong> of a total of \u20ac65,000 for the top four projects and&nbsp;<strong>business plan services<\/strong>&nbsp;for the first six projects (4+2).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fondazione Cariplo also wanted to create a&nbsp;<strong>favourable context for discussion<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>call<\/strong>&nbsp;was also intended for organisations and associations that deal with services for people with disabilities and vulnerabilities \u2013 the&nbsp;<strong>Social Partners<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 so that a collaboration could be established between developers of innovative products and services and their users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organisations and associations fulfilling these characteristics have responded to the&nbsp;<strong>call for accreditation<\/strong>, making themselves available to find forms of collaboration with the participants in the CREW call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The accredited associations participated in the&nbsp;<strong>networking day<\/strong>, where about 60 people competed, representing more than 30 associations (Social Partners) and 14&nbsp;<strong>Business Initiatives and
