Fondazione Cariplo’s President from February 5, 1997 to May 28, 2019, as he was confirmed in that position on May 10, 2013 upon the renewal of the Foundation’s Steering Board, Giuseppe Guzzetti is a lawyer, politician and philanthropist. He serves as President of Lombardy Regional Government from 1979 to 1987, and in 2000 was appointed President of ACRI, the association of Italian savings banks and banking foundations. Italian banking foundations have played and still play a key role in driving growth of philanthropic entities which operate under the principle of subsidiarity and back third-sector players that carry out social benefit projects in the fields of arts and culture, scientific research, environmental protection and services meeting people’s fundamental needs for housing, employment, welfare, family support. To these very same areas past President Guzzetti devoted his energy and efforts in his work at Fondazione Cariplo and his widely recognized brilliance as a lawyer contributed to winning Italy’s Constitutional Court recognition (judgements 300 and 301 of September 29, 2003) of the identity and role of Italian banking foundations as fully-fledged “independent, self-governed private entities …. that organize social freedoms".
