In spite of the efforts and progress made in recent years, Italy is still lagging behind in scientific research. Our country invests little in research and development, especially in applied research whose results have a direct impact on growth and the competitiveness of the economic system. This is of particular concern because having scientific research yield applications is key to the survival of businesses in the increasingly competitive global arena. Only product and process innovation generated by applied research can secure the prosperity of our country in the future.
Under Action Plan 7 the Foundation supports projects with the potential to yield major innovative applications that leverage collaboration of research groups, enhance their scientific production and build the critical mass of resources that is key to economic growth.
This entails actions geared to further scientific production, boost the impact of applications yielded by research, attract young talents, increase the number of scientists, promote the adoption of multi-discipline approaches to find solution to tangible problems and enhance communication of the application potential of discoveries made by scientists.
