Fondazione Cariplo, €71 million to social housing

Social housing?

Fondazione Cariplo has been a pioneer in social housing since 1999, giving some €71 million to back thousands of initiatives providing accommodation to those in need, through efforts that have become a model domestically and internationally. Right from the start, the Foundation has viewed social housing as a ‘complex’ need, one to be tackled under a 360-degree approach. Hence, the efforts it has deployed have gone beyond provision of accommodation to vulnerable population groups, and have included social integration programs along two lines: strengthening the ability of individuals to lead an independent life, and creating welcoming, collaborative communities of neighbors.

Specifically, Fondazione Cariplo has invested more than €28 million in social housing funds, has given €51 million to nonprofit organizations for projects providing temporary accommodations that have helped many people: single mothers, elderly and unemployed individuals, people with disabilities, and relatives of locally hospitalized patients coming from far way. In 15 years, Fondazione Cariplo has supported the creation of nearly 800 housing units and 3,000 beds that have accommodated thousands of people in need. Now there is also an online portal aggregating all players and initiatives in the field: the largest social housing monitoring effort ever made in Italy. Thanks to sophisticated geo-referencing systems, there will be a complete mapping of social housing in Italy, including both affordable housing units for young couples, elderly people, migrants, single-income households, and temporary accommodation solutions for vulnerable population groups or other people with urgent housing needs.

First presented at Bocconi University, Milan, Italy, on October 7, 2014, during the CSR Week, for the time being, the portal contains information, pictures and details about 200 places for a total of more than 700 units across Lombardy created under projects funded by our Foundation through its ‘Social  Housing’ calls for proposals process, and still active. Another dozens of social housing projects are still underway and once completed will be mapped. The ultimate goal is creating an online community where organizations in the field, individuals and physical communities can interact. The portal project has entailed the participation of the Social Housing Foundation, which is the technical advisor of various funds and the national leader in social housing.
